Smoothie Please

This morning we decided on smoothies for breakfast. I've been making them for a while now thanks to the ease of my Ninja Master Prep. I love the thing. This morning I decided to take pictures as we made the smoothies and share the recipe. Here's what you need:

2 cups of ice
2 6 oz. containers yogurt (I use Yoplait Light French Vanilla)
1 banana
1 cup blueberries rinsed
10 strawberries rinsed and sliced

We add the ice, yogurt, then fruits to the Ninja. Then I blend for 2-3 minutes until smooth.

Liberty sliced the strawberries

Blueberries, banana, yogurt, and ice in the Ninja

Strawberries added before blending

All the ingredients layered in the Ninja

After blending

One for each of us

These are really easy smoothies and we all three love them. It's a great way to get Liberty to have some fruit in the morning. What shocked me was when I entered the recipe in MyFitnessPal this morning and the smoothie is only 157 calories. These smoothies are a great way to start the day.

Yup. Fresh fruit is surprisingly low calorie. Fruit juice is somewhere around 3-4x as calorie dense, I think, moreso if it's missing pulp. Fruit is mostly water. Pasta is mostly starch. Starch = carbs = glycemic load.

Adding a teaspoon or two of peanut/almond butter to a smoothie will reduce its glycemic index even further by adding protein, but adds a few calories - usually not enough to break the bank. Anything that adds fiber and protein is good in moderation - 30g of fiber a day is very hard to achieve with processed foods all around us.
